This blog contains INSTRUCTIONS TO LIFE. (Ironically, these come after you've already figured something out and might not always work on everyone.)

a husband. a wife. a millionaire. a proposal

Diana: Have I ever told you I love you? David: No. Diana: I do. David: Still? Diana: Always.

i just watched indecent proposal on HBO sixteen years after i have first seen it. i was only 13 when i first saw it and half the time with my eyes covered, the other half of the time barely understanding what it was all about. the movie was known for its controversial theme, its sexy scenes and demi moore. and being young, all i knew of the movie was that it was sleazy.

now, seeing it again with a more mature perspective, i realize the movie is a beautiful love story of two people, in love, living in a very material world. the story is actually more real than we know it and it happens to most, if not all, of us. the millionaire, the proposal are exaggerated forms of challenges couples face that try to tear them apart.

the movie was wonderfully written, very simple and honest. my favorite line would have to be one of woody harrelson’s character david murphy: “now i know that the things that people in love do to each other, they remember. and if they stay together, it’s not because they forget. it’s because they forgive.”

and i should be hating demi moore’s character diana murphy for giving in again to john gage, rober redford’s character, after she and david fought. but my heart just melted and i cried when diana went back to the pier where david proposed to her, to “remember”.
